FAILING TO INVEST IN CYBER SECURITY PAINTS A TARGET ON YOUR BUSINESS

13 Aug 2021

In 2018, a single malware attack cost as much as $2.6 million whilst ransomware attacks cost businesses up to $646,000. Worst of all, these costs are rising year on year.

In 2019 it was reported that 60% of small businesses are forced to close within six months of a data breach or cyber-attack. Whilst the significant financial loss of a cyber-attack is difficult to recover from, it can prove impossible when you’ve lost the trust of your customers.

At this point, you may be thinking ’but it won’t happen to me’. Yet a survey from EY (Ernst & Young) reported that one-third of all businesses have already become the victim of a cyber-attack. Worse yet, another survey from Horvath & Partners reported that it’s two-thirds. The scary fact is that both instances fail to include unreported attacks. EY continued to report that 15% of cyber incidents are discovered by chance with many more sliding under the radar.

The question you need to ask yourself is could hiring cyber security experts help secure the future of your business. More importantly, can you afford not to?

Who are hackers targeting in 2020?

If you shoot a thousand arrows, one is bound to hit the bullseye, right? Unfortunately, for hackers, the target is one of us and rather than shooting a thousand arrows, they send a million emails.

The scattergun approach is one occasionally adopted by marketing and sales teams based on the principle that if you deliver your message to enough people, eventually one will take the bait. Whilst many marketing and sales professionals are moving away from this towards strategies with more finesse and focus, hackers don’t share the same care for their work.

After all, it only takes one business to unknowingly allow a hacker into their system for the hacker to demand a ransom.

With that in mind, who do you imagine will eventually fall prey to scattergun tactics? Not large businesses with layers and levels of security that even the most proficient hackers can’t touch. No, it’ll fall to an unsuspecting employee at a small or medium business to click a phishing email.

How to hire cyber security candidates

Hiring cyber security candidates to help secure your data is an incredibly challenging task for any business. Finding the right skills in the right location for the right salary is just the tip of the iceberg, especially for small businesses without cyber security systems already implemented.

First, you need to consider the type of experts you want in your business.

Do you need a Security Incident Manager to deal with incidents as they occur or a Penetration Tester (ethical hacker) who seeks out and highlights vulnerabilities within your systems?

That’s where recruitment consultants come in.

At Westpoint Cyber Security we’re constantly in touch with top cyber security candidates across the world. What’s more, we know them and their CV’s as well as they know themselves.

We specialise in placing these experts within your business by finding an ideal match for a win-win-win situation. Our experienced consultants have extensive experience in placing candidates, not just with the right skills, but who are also the right fit culturally.
